Just as the USS Monitor could not have operated without a dedicated crew, neither can the expedition team conduct the mission alone. It takes many committed partners to stage a successful operation. Click image for larger view.


Mission Partners

The Monitor 2001 Expedition is being conducted jointly by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Navy exit icon and The Mariners’ Museum exit icon.

Support for the engine recovery phase (Phase II) is being provided by Newport News Shipbuilding, Inc., Phoenix International, Inc. exit icon, the U.S. Army Transportation Command, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

NOAA research dives during Phases I and III will be conducted by NOAA, the National Undersea Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington exit icon, the Maritime Studies Program at East Carolina University exit icon, and the Cambrian Foundation exit icon.

Primary funding for the expedition was awarded by the Department of Defense Legacy Resource Management Program exit icon, with additional funding from NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and Office of Ocean Exploration. Conservation and exhibition funding and support is being provided by The Mariners’ Museum.
