Expedition Education Modules are designed to share the excitement of daily at-sea discoveries and the science behind NOAA’s major ocean exploration initiatives with educators, students, and the public around the world.
The NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer Windows to the Deep 2019: Exploration of the Deep-sea Habitats of the Southeastern United States expedition offers a unique opportunity for explorers of all ages to investigate deepwater habitats, interesting geological features, and archaeology in the south Atlantic. You might choose to learn more about why NOAA and its partners are exploring this particular deep-ocean area, what advanced technologies are being used, and what explorers are hoping to find. You might also be looking to learn more about the explorers themselves so your students more fully understand what skills and expertise are required to support careers in ocean exploration. You just might need a short video or images to complete your lesson unit on a particular topic. Whatever your NOAA deep-ocean exploration education needs, we hope that you will find them here.
The NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) aims to provide teachers with resources and training to support ocean literacy in America's classrooms. See below for links to ONMS resources and resources associated with this expedition near the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.
The Outer Banks is one of the most unique places in the world, containing some of the most dramatic barrier islands and most dangerous shoals and currents on earth. The area is often referred to as the Graveyard of the Atlantic because these waters have entombed thousands of vessels and countless mariners who lost a desperate struggle against the forces of war, piracy and nature. The Battle of the Atlantic was one of the longest and most decisive campaigns of World War II and the Outer Banks is where the war came home to continental U.S. This expedition will assist the Sanctuary in further mapping these historic wrecks.
