Expedition Education Module

Expedition Education Modules are designed to assist educators with bringing expeditions and discoveries of NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer into classrooms using live and recorded video and imagery from the remotely operated vehicle, Deep Discoverer. To support use of live and recorded video and enable educators to design their own instructional strategies for classrooms around particular expeditions, lessons, multimedia tools, and a wealth of other resources have been developed to convey the deep-sea exploration strategies and discoveries at locations all over the world.

You might choose to learn more about why NOAA and its partners are exploring this particular deep-ocean area, what advanced technologies are being used, and what explorers are hoping to find. You might also be looking to learn more about the explorers themselves so your students more fully understand what skills and expertise are required to support careers in ocean exploration. You just might need a short video or images to complete your lesson unit on a particular topic. Whatever your NOAA deep-ocean exploration education needs are, we hope that you will find them all met here in the Expedition Education Module.

Expedition Purpose: Why Are We Exploring Johnston Atoll?

Expedition Purpose: Why Are We Exploring Johnston Atoll?

In January 2017, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer began her third and final year in an effort to investigate the rich biodiversity and dynamic geology in deepwater environments of the U.S. central and western Pacific Ocean. The purpose of this three-year exploration campaign, titled the Campaign to Address Pacific monument Science, Technology, and Ocean NEeds (CAPSTONE), is to systematically collect baseline information to support science and management needs within and around marine monuments and other protected places in the Pacific. The campaign serves as an opportunity for NOAA and the nation to highlight the uniqueness and importance of these national symbols of ocean conservation.
