Science AMA Series: We are engineers and videographers with the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration and we design, build, and operate underwater robots that explore the deep ocean and the large lakes of the world. Ask Us Anything!
Meet the team from the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration that operates the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research’s remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). This group of over a dozen (young and old) mechanical, electrical, software, and video engineers design, build, and operate underwater robots. On March 3, they will be available on Reddit to answer your questions about what it takes to build vehicles that explore some of the most inaccessible ecosystems on the planet!
The team is are currently operating the ROVs Deep Discoverer (D2) and Seirios aboard NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer as we explore deep-sea habitats in the waters of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. ROVs are a critical tool in exploring the geology and biology hidden in the cold and dark depths of marine protected areas like the Monument.
The HD video streams from the ROVs are being transmitted via satellite from ship to shore. This means that anyone with an Internet connection can tune in LIVE with scientists from around the world, sharing an unprecedented glimpse of never-before-seen deep-sea habitats.
The ROV team will be available on Reddit from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm ET to answer your questions. “Ask Them Anything!”
