This media resources page provides members of the media with information; resources; and broadcast-, print-, and web-quality imagery developed during the Our Deepwater Backyard: Exploring Atlantic Canyons and Seamounts 2014 expedition.

Over the course of the Atlantic Canyons and Seamounts 2014 expedition, scientists will explore several seamounts and submarine canyons, deep-sea coral habitats, and potential chemosynthetic communities, all within in a couple hundred miles of some of the most densely populated sections of the United States.

Important Background Information

The expedition will take place on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, the only federally funded ship dedicated to ocean exploration.
Okeanos Explorer is equipped with telepresence technology that uses satellites to deliver data quickly from the ship to shore. This means that many scientists on shore can actively participate in expeditions, greatly expanding the reach and scope of expertise beyond a traditional research mission.
Telepresence also enables anyone with an Internet connection to watch expedition activities, including seafloor mapping and remotely operated vehicle video, in real time.
Okeanos Explorer is equipped with two remotely operated vehicles, Deep Discoverer and Seirios, that steam video from the seafloor back to the ship.
Data collected on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer is quality assured and then made quickly available to the public. Collected data is used by scientists and resource managers to plan follow-on research, make management decisions, detect natural hazards, improve nautical charts, enhance climate models, and more.
The expedition is being coordinated by the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, which is the only federal organization currently dedicated to exploring our unknown ocean. The office's unique capabilities are allowing us to reduce unknowns in deep-ocean areas and provide the high-value environmental intelligence needed by NOAA and the nation to address both current and emerging science and management needs.
