The NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research invites formal and informal educators to participate in a webinar to introduce educational resources developed for an ocean exploration mission to explore seamounts and submarine canyons off the Northeast U.S. coast.
The New England Seamount Chain is made up of dozens of extinct underwater volcanoes extending from the edge of the Northeast U.S. continental shelf to about 700 miles eastward across the Atlantic Basin. Additionally, many submarine canyons link the continental shelf to deeper waters. From September 4 – October 7, scientists aboard the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer will explore the diversity of benthic habitats and features in this region.
Using telepresence technology, scientists on board the ship will collaborate with scientists participating remotely from shore. The expedition will use the ship’s core capabilities: the NOAA remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Deep Discoverer, which can reach a depth of 6,000 meters; multibeam sonar for bathymetric mapping; and a Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) profiler to characterize unknown and poorly-known areas of our ocean. Educators, students and the general public can follow along and watch this expedition unfold in real-time via the Internet.
This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to the expedition and the associated education products, including standards-based lessons and other resources to enable you and your students to delve more deeply into the expedition online. Resources presented will be archived for use during the upcoming academic year.
