Join the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) for a webinar for educators introducing educational resources developed for an ocean exploration mission to explore the intriguing topic of bioluminescence in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico.
July 14-27, 2015, scientific experts will be exploring the unknown world of deep-sea benthic bioluminescence and examining interactions between vision and bioluminescence. The primary regions of study will include several sites in the Gulf of Mexico briefly visited by the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer and two sites with a large diversity and abundance of animals that have never been looked at for bioluminescence.
During this expedition the science team will: search for new habitats, species, and communities of organisms; explore specific examples of interactions between organisms in the water column and on the seafloor that involve bioluminescence; and study the vision capability of a specific species of isopod in relation to bioluminescence and its food targets.
Technological tools that will be used during this expedition include the Global Explorer remotely operated vehicle that has an insulated BioBOX for careful collection of organisms and a Medusa Lander, a system used to gather captivating video and imagery of deep sea organisms in their natural environment.
This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to the expedition and the associated education products, including standards-based lessons and other resources to enable you and your students to delve more deeply into the expedition online. Resources presented will be archived for use during the upcoming academic year.
