NOAA Ocean Exploration Webinar for Educators – 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas

NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research invites educators and other interested parties to a webinar to introduce educational resources developed for the upcoming 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. This cruise will continue west from the 2016 Hohonu Moana Expedition’s exploration of deep-water habitats in and around Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument to explore the deep water of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands and the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument through mid-July. It will then continue on to Wake Island late July through mid-August.
Through multibeam sonar mapping, water column profiling, and videography using the NOAA remotely operated vehicle, Deep Discoverer, scientists will explore enormous mud volcanoes, hydrothermal vents, pools of liquid sulfur, carbon dioxide bubbling from the seafloor, seamounts, dense apex predators, and spectacular coral reefs. The science team is particularly excited about exploring Wake Island, as this territory is essentially completely unexplored!
Using telepresence, scientists on board will collaborate with scientists participating remotely from shore as they investigate the unique geology and biology of this region. Educators, students, and the general public can follow along and watch this expedition unfold in real time via the Internet.
This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to the expeditions and the associated education products, including standards-based lessons and other resources to enable educators and their students to delve more deeply into the expedition online.
