On June 30, 1906, the New Orleans was carrying coal when she collided with the steamer the William R. Linn. All of the crew boarded the Linn safely before the pilothouse of the New Orleans blew off and the vessel sank. The following day, the only evidence of the collision was the floating pilothouse.
