Location: In transit between Dartmouth and Gully Canyon
Today, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer departed from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, to officially start Leg 2 of the Deep Connections 2019 expedition. The ship departed the pier at 2 pm Atlantic Daylight Time and began her transit towards the first dive site of the expedition at the Gully Canyon.
During the transit, the onboard team hosted a live interaction with the NOAA Exploration Command Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. Staff from the office of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) visited the Exploration Command Center to learn about the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) and the value of ocean exploration. On site, they spoke with members of NOAA OER leadership before calling the ship and speaking directly with Expedition Coordinator Daniel Wagner, who highlighted the objectives of the Deep Connections 2019 expedition and the many partnerships that have made it all possible.
