From April 2024 through November 2024, NOAA Ocean Exploration and partners will conduct a series of telepresence-enabled ocean exploration expeditions on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer to improve knowledge about unexplored and poorly understood deepwater areas of Hawai’i and Johnston Atoll. Data collected will establish a baseline in these areas to catalyze further exploration, research, and management activities in the region.

NOAA Ocean Exploration typically supports three to four expeditions with remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations per year on Okeanos Explorer and brings on two members of the scientific community per expedition to serve as onboard science leads. Science leads are responsible for providing critical scientific guidance on the characterization of biological and geological discoveries that result from ROV expeditions. If you are interested in serving in the science lead role, please complete the Science Lead Interest Form. Your responses will be evaluated and a member of the office will get back to you.

Through the use of telepresence, far more people are able to participate in Okeanos Explorer expeditions than with a more “traditional” research cruise, providing many opportunities to get involved. Visit this page to learn more about how to get involved in the two primary types of Okeanos cruises conducted – mapping exploration and remotely operated vehicle cruises.
