Grade Level: 5-6
Focus: Dispersal of benthic invertebrate larvae (Life Science)
Students explain the meaning of "larval dispersal" and "larval retention" and explain the importance of larval dispersal and larval retention to populations of organisms in the marine environment. Given data on recruitment of organisms to artificial substrates, students draw inferences about larval dispersal in these species.
Grade Level: 9-12
Focus: DEcosystems associated with cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Earth Science)
Students define cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, explain how they are formed, discuss their associated ecosystems, and discuss the positive and negative impacts of mining these mineral resources from the deep ocean. Students evaluate competing design solutions for protecting ecosystems associated with cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts from potential human impacts.
