Bathycyroe fosteri is a midwater lobate ctenophore about 5 centimeters tall. Ctenophores have such fragile bodies that they cannot be preserved for study; they simply dissolve in any chemical solution. New species are described from photographs and living specimens carefully collected by hand or in large containers attached to ROVs or submersibles. Image courtesy of Larry Madin, WHOI.
