The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Deep Submergence group has plenty of practice ensuring that the 8700-lb Jason and 3000-lb Medea are launched in a safe and effective manner. Safely launching and recovering the ROV system is a result of the combined efforts of the master of the ship, officer on duty, launch coordinator, Jason pilot, engineer, navigator, crane operator, and line and tether handlers. All personnel need to know the requirements of their position well before launch and recovery occur. All hands on deck must wear hardhats and life vests. Tether handlers wear high voltage rubber gloves when the vehicle is under power. Any of these personnel can stop the operation at any time to address safety concerns. This video shows just a few of the steps specifically associated with launching the ROV. Video courtesy of Expedition to the Deep Slope 2007, NOAA-OE.
