The geographic names of the study area that were the focus of the Sounds of the Southern Ocean expedition. The research group flew via Chilean C-130 from Punta Arenas to King George Island, where they stayed at the Korean Antarctic base until it was time to board the Russian icebreaker Yuzhmorgeologiya. The ship was then used to deploy 7 hydrophones throughout the Bransfield Strait and Drake Passage. King George Island is the largest in the archipelago of submarine and subaerial volcanoes known as the South Shetland Islands off of the Antarctic Peninsula.
