Microphotograph of micro-organisms that were living inside the chimneys at Lost City. The organisms are stained with a special chemical that causes them to show up under filtered light. This images shows a very large colony of microbes-each individual dot is a single cell about 1 micron across. The colonies form biofilms on the surfaces of carbonate minerals.
