Geology major Keith Tsudama marks the current location of the DSL120 tow-sled on a bathymetric map of the area being investigated. One of the students’ roles while at sea is to stand a 4-hour watch every 24 hours in the DSL van and monitor incoming data from sensors attached to the tow-sled and clump weight. The location of the DSL120 is marked every 15 minutes by each “watchstander,” and anomalies in incoming data that suggest the presence of hydrothermal plumes are recorded.
