Wreckfish catch per fishing trip has remained steady over the years, following the introduction of regulations in 1990. Since its beginning in the late 1980s, the U.S. wreckfish fishery has been a management success. The species supports a small sustained fishery that is managed by limiting the number of fishermen, banning of longline gear that can result in overfishing, limiting the total annual catch and closing the fishery during the spawning season. The wreckfish can serve as a model for management of other single-species fisheries.
