Using the Johnson Sea Link submersible, sediment cores like this one were collected from both the hydrate and brine pool sites. Cores were taken from sediments blanketed in orange or white bacterial mats, as well as sediments in close proximity to the hydrate mounds or the brine pools. Precise and selective coring such as this could only be accomplished by using a submersible with a well trained pilot. Image courtesy of Gulf of Mexico 2002, NOAA/OER.
