The Brine Trapper seen here attached to the side of the Johnson Sea Link, is a large cylinder with ten chambers cut out of the center, built by Dr. Ian MacDonald and his graduate students. Each of these chambers can be sealed, collecting brine at different depths. Returning to the ship, the samples were kept under pressure, allowing dissolved gases to be collected as well as the brine water itself. Image courtesy of Gulf of Mexico 2002, NOAA/OER.
