Ice. . .thats what the ship has been looking for. As of August 18th, the Sea ice Ecology group was the only group of scientists that had not yet collected any samples. They needed multiyear ice thick enough to safely walk and carry equipment on. Finding it was difficult. Finally on August 19th, the captain found a patch of thick pack ice that would work. Once on the ice, sampling included the collection of water from melt ponds and brine holes as well as 5-8 ice cores. Scientists from China and the US worked together to drill the cores. The frozen cylinders were then melted on board the ship and examined for life. VVideo courtesy of Emory Kristof.Download largest version (mp4, 3.1 MB).
