Many of the volcanic seamounts in the Gulf of Alaska are visible on this bathymetric map. Only a few of these seamounts have been studied, but we will only be able to visit the five that are labeled. The current location of the Cobb hotspot, which is responsible for forming all of the seamounts we will visit except Campbell, is shown in red. Axial seamount is above the Cobb hotpsot now, and volcanic activity there is being closely monitored by NOAA's New Millennium Observatory.
